Atlantic Cancer Research Institute Plays Host to International Research Symposium

(Moncton, August 24, 2007) – An international symposium was held in Moncton on August 22 and 23 that attracted participants from throughout Canada, several U.S. states, the UK and Japan. Entitled the Atlantic Omics Symposium and Expo, the conference examined the current state of emerging technologies in the broad area of “omics”.

Omics is a general term used for a broad discipline of science for analyzing the interactions of biological information objects in various large-scale, data-rich fields such as genomics and proteomics. These fields are an inescapable component of understanding gene regulation and function of human development and disease.

The symposium included a host of international speakers, that brought together their experience and understanding of omic technologies used to analyze human disease such as brain and lung cancer and Werner syndrome.

This third annual symposium was organized by the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI) in collaboration with the National Research Council. Dr Rodney Ouellette, CEO of ACRI, is thrilled with the caliber of speakers and the productive discussions that followed. "We understand the importance of being on the cutting edge of new technologies in the cancer research sector, and we are very pleased and proud that this top-flight symposium is being held in Moncton." Dr. Ouellette said.

About the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute.

Founded in 1998, the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI) is a private, non-profit facility, located at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Regional Hospital in Moncton, N.B. It combines research expertise in genomics and biomedical sciences with state-of-the-art technology. Scientists are working with multiple partners to discover the genetic origins of cancer, develop new diagnostic tools and therapies to improve the outcomes of those affected by cancer and, ultimately, to find a cure for the disease.
