Dr. Bélanger joined the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute as a senior research scientist in 2015. She will work in the New Brunswick Innovation Research Chair in Medical Technologies program. She obtained her B.Sc, B.Ed and M.Sc. degrees from the Université de Moncton, and her Ph.D. from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1984. Following her graduate studies she started her career as a Research Scientist with Canada's Health Department (Health & Welfare Canada), then moved on to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and finally with Environment Canada from 1993 to 2010.
In 1989-1990 she was on secondment to Canada's Department of Industry, Science and Technology (ISTC), Federal Research Directorate, Science Sector, as Scientific Advisor. In her last position with Environment Canada (1993-2010) she contributed to the development of the patented Microwave-Assisted Processes (MAPTM) family of technologies. Her research interests were in analytical chemistry and in the development of energy-efficient technologies. After an early retirement from Environment Canada in 2010 Dr. Bélanger remained active in Science & Technology providing expert advices to various private commercial firms.

Her contribution to the Chair focuses on innovative hyperthermia processes development and models in the area of cancer treatment. The approach based upon the use of electromagnetic forces as energy sources will also be applied to cancer detection.

Applications to non-medical sectors such as food safety are also part of her interest. She dedicates some time to support Intellectual Property (IP) issues associated with her work as well as contributing to testing and validating prototypes, training, promotion and support in selected market development. She will also assist in custom-tailored training and courses.

In recognition for her contributions to technology development Dr. Bélanger received various awards including: Environment Canada's Departmental Citation of Excellence Awards (1999 and 2001); Treasury Board Citation of Excellence Award (2000); 5-Natural Resources Science Award to Leaders in Sustainable Development (2001); United States Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Science & Technical Achievement Award (2001); and The Head of the Public Service Award (2002).
